Theft and Vandalism in Wells

Unfortunately, there have been a number of thefts in the District of Wells in the past two weeks. Equally unfortunately is the fact that most of these incidents have not been reported to the RCMP. The RCMP Officers have assured us that no incident that involves theft or vandalism is too petty and all incidents should definitely be reported.

Please notify the RCMP at 250-994-3314 and report all incidents.
The RCMP Officers currently in Wells are:
  • Constable Jason Archer
  •  Constable Bryce Fiegehen

Building Permits

Please note that when you apply for a building permit you MUST submit a drawing which must then be approved by the Building Inspector BEFORE you are granted a permit to proceed.

Bear Alert!

It is bear season, so please be extra careful out there! Here are a few rules of Bear Safety:
  • Make sure that all food, garbage, or other possible attractants are stored where bears cannot get access.
  • Put garbage out only on the morning of garbage collection day.
  • Report bear incidents to the RCMP (994-3314)
  • Do not feed bears – or any wild animals.

Wells Wellness Grant

On Wednesday, May 7th, BC Healthy Communities and PlanH announced the approved grants for their Community Capacity Building Fund. The program received over 150 applications, of which only 49 were approved. The District of Wells is pleased to announce that our application was successful and we will be receiving $5000 through the “Learn & Connect” stream of the program.

The “Wells Wellness Plan” project is to create a long-term wellness plan for our community through discussions and input from community members, health professionals and Northern Health. The results will help us assess the success of past health projects as well
as identify how to target efforts to fill the gaps that still exist.

Since our busy summer season is already beginning, the project is set to begin in the fall. We always look forward to new ways of improving our community’s health and look forward to engaging individuals and clubs in this project.

District of Wells Announcements

The District of Wells is pleased to announce that Katrina Leckovic has been appointed as the new Chief Administrative Officer for the District of Wells. Katrina will replace current CAO, Gary Champagne, who had returned to the position after retiring in 2011.

Mayor Robin Sharpe and the Wells Council selected Leckovic from a wide pool of local, regional and national applicants. Of the appointment, the mayor says, “after an extensive search and great candidates, I am pleased to welcome Katrina to our wonderful little town and look forward to working with her. Katrina will add a new dimension to our office and is bringing many new ideas and experiences to the community.”

Leckovic comes to Wells very highly recommended by the Town of Antigonish in Nova Scotia where she was most recently the Manager of Strategic Initiatives. Although Antigonish was hoping to keep her for their senior management position, Katrina was keen to move back to BC. In reply to inquiries that have reached the District Office, yes, this is the same Katrina Leckovic who was a professional golfer and qualified for the US LPGA tour in 2008.

Despite the cold, snowy, thaw weather we had in April, during her brief visit to Wells last month, Katrina was impressed by the people she met and the sense of community that was apparent. Katrina will begin in her new position on May 5, 2014 and will work with Gary through a...
