District of Wells: The General Election for Local Governments in British Columbia takes place on October 20, 2018

For those thinking of running in the upcoming 2018 General Election for the position of Mayor or Councillor on the District of Wells Council, nomination packages will be made available from July 27, 2018 at the District of Wells’ office at 4243 Sanders Avenue as well as on the District’s website:  www.wells.ca

The nomination period for candidates opens at 9:00 AM on September 4th, 2018 and closes at 4:00 PM on September 14th, 2018.

Local Government Elections in British Columbia now happen every four years.  This includes elections for Municipal Mayors and Councillors, School Trustees, and Regional District Electoral Area Directors.

Running for Local Office

Residents of B.C. interested in running for local government office in a general local election or by-election must meet certain eligibility requirements to be nominated.  In addition, Provincial legislation sets out how candidates may run and finance their election campaigns and advertise their candidacy.

Candidate Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to run for local government office in a general local election or a by-election, a person must have been a resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before filing their nomination documents. They do not have to live or own property in the area where they are running for office.

In addition, the person must meet the following criteria:

  • Be Canadian citizen.
  • Be 18 years of age or older on general voting day.
  • Not be disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from being nominated for, being elected to or holding office, or be otherwise disqualified by law.
